Academic drawings by Edouard Hennaert

  • Collectie

The Yper Museum recently acquired a folder containing beautiful academic drawings from a descendant of the Ypres painter Edouard Hennaert (1831-1886). Academic drawings are study drawings that were usually produced in a formally organised drawing school.

Edouard Hennaert is not very well known, but there is no doubt about his talent. As a student at the Ypres academy (between 1846 and 1853), he won just about every prize available. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds, Hennaert was unable to continue his studies at the academy in Antwerp. He was condemned to a career in his provincial hometown. In Ypres, he was assistant to Louis Delbeke (1821-1891) and helped with the grand project of the murals in the Cloth Hall between 1881 and 1891. In addition to two painted portraits, the museums in Ypres mainly have drawings by him.
